15th August, 2019 Tonga – The Kingdom of Tonga is set to benefit from a National Energy Bill which will assist the Tongan Authorities by formalising the functions of the Energy Division within the Ministry and establishing key governance structures in the energy sector. This initiative has been made possible through the funding provided by the European Union (EU) to assist in the reform of the energy sector, including development of the Energy Bill.

Tuvalu although being one of the smallest coral atoll nations in the world, it is taking global leadership in its mitigation efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

Moving with urgency, boldness and increased ambition, the Government of Tuvalu is partnering with the Pacific Community’s Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE) to conduct a National Energy Dialogue on Advancing its Energy and GHG mitigation targets.


July 29, 2019. Peter Lynch, his wife Salena and son Hugo were exuberantly feted in Vanuatu at celebrations that officially flicked the switch on reliable power to four remote villages.

Since 2011, their Dorrigo-based company Pelena Energy has been working with local communities on Maewo Island to install hydroelectricity.

Peter has visited on many occasions over the years, but July 13 was the first time “family blong Mr Peter” came too.


More than 1000 people from across Vava’u including their Majesties, Ministers, Nobles and the local crowd were drawn towards the PCREEE/DoE display during the Royal Agriculture, Fisheries and Tourism Trade Show which took place on 19th July 2019 to promote the use of renewable energy for entrepreneurship and energy efficiency.


More than 30 form 7 students at the Vava’u High School participated in a promotional lecture led jointly by the Department of Energy and the PCREEE on 18th July 2019 to raise the students’ awareness and interest on pursuing further studies and job and business opportunities on sustainable energy. The lecture has a theory and practical component as well as a competition component to test the students’ understanding and effectiveness of the lecture.
